• Aesthetic Appeal: Tooth-colored or white fillings are designed to match the natural color of your teeth, making them virtually invisible. This aesthetic advantage is especially important for fillings in visible areas, like the front teeth, as it helps maintain a natural and seamless appearance.

  • Bonding Strength: Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth structure, which can enhance the strength and durability of the repaired tooth. This bonding process also allows for more conservative treatment, meaning less of the natural tooth needs to be removed compared to some other types of fillings.

  • Versatility and Durability: Tooth-colored fillings are versatile and can be used for a variety of restorations, including cavities, chipped teeth, and minor structural damage. They are durable and can withstand normal chewing forces, though they may not be as long-lasting as some other materials, like amalgam, in cases of heavy wear or large fillings. Regular dental check-ups are important to ensure their longevity.

White Fillings

For over a century, cavities were filled with a mixture of metals, including silver and mercury. Traditional silver fillings (which eventually turn black) make an unpleasant addition to your otherwise beautiful smile.

Recent research shows that the expansive natures of silver fillings can actually fracture and crack teeth.  These discoloured amalgams are a thing of the past at Smiles on Harrogate Road as we offer ‘tooth coloured fillings’.

Jack

I was seen by Dr Gill and nurse Emilia. My tooth fillings are white and my smile has been transformed, extremely professional staff and all did a fantastic job.

Today, we restore cavities and small cracks in your teeth with composite tooth coloured fillings, which consists of a special non-toxic resin that can match the colour of your tooth so it blends with the rest of the tooth structure and become invisible. These tooth coloured fillings are as strong and as durable as silver, but gives your smile a more natural look.

You no longer have to be self-conscious showing your smile with traditional gold and silver amalgam fillings. Now you can smile with confidence as you show off your perfectly blended tooth coloured fillings.

Tooth FillingComposite fillings are modern ‘tooth coloured’ fillings that bond directly to the tooth, resulting in reduced amount of tooth preparation. We can match the shade closely to the colour of your tooth, providing an aesthetically pleasing result. They are often as durable as amalgam fillings and free from mercury.

Amalgam fillings consist of many metals like silver, copper and tin, and also contain mercury. They appear silver in the mouth, and although not aesthetically pleasing, they have proven to be strong enough for large fillings

Glass Ionomer fillings are often used as a temporary filling or used in baby teeth because they release fluoride.

Sometimes you may not notice any signs or symptoms that a filling is needed which is why it is so important to have routine dental checkups. If you experience tooth sensitivity or pain when eating cold, hot or sweet foods or drinks, there may be tooth decay that needs to be removed and a filling placed. Toothache is a common sign of a cavity and an appointment with the dentist is required

Having a filling is mostly painless because Dr Fiona or Dr Gill will provide local anaesthetic to numb up the area.

Dr Fiona or Dr Gill will numb up the area with a local anaesthetic. Once numb, they will drill away damaged or decayed or weak enamel. Then they will apply the filling material decided by yourself (composite or amalgam). Once filled they will shape, and smooth the filling. Finally they will check the occlusion (bite) to see if it is comfortable and make adjustments if needed. For a single dental filling the process takes between 30-60 mins depending on the size and complexity of the filling.

The area will be numb for approx 2-3 hours so it will be advised to have a softer diet on that side and avoid hot drinks, to reduce the risk of physical or thermal trauma. The tooth may be sensitive or tender for a day or two but normal painkillers like paracetamol should suffice.

With good oral hygiene and diet, and routine visits to Smiles on Harrogate Road your filling can last more than 10 years. To achieve good oral hygiene brushing twice a day and floss/tepes daily would be required and visiting the dentist regularly for regular check ups and scale and polishes to remove plaque and tatar. Good diet would entail reducing sugary snacks and drinks to reduce the risk of decay forming under fillings.

Tooth FillingIt is possible to replace the amalgam fillings with more aesthetically pleasing fillings. An appointment would be required with Dr Fiona or Dr Gill to discuss this further
